My Close Encounter With Hell

Hell is a topic most people do not want to hear about or discuss. Yet the Bible speaks clearly about it. Hell is described as a place of eternal punishment and unquenchable fire, prepared for the wicked and unrepentant after death. Scripture makes it clear that hell is not symbolic imagination or mere religious fear tactics. It is real. Revelation 21:8 says, “But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.” Also, Matthew 10:28 says, “And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.”

Life is full of decisions, and one of the greatest decisions you can make is to accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour and walk in righteousness. If you choose to reject Jesus and continue in sin and disobedience, you must remember that after death comes judgment. Hebrews 9:27 says, “And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment. Judgment is when God examines our actions, motives, and the life we lived to determine whether we are fit for heaven or hell. Those who lived a righteous life and have their names written in the Book of Life, will make it to heaven. But those who live contrary to God’s ways will end up in hell, as stated in Revelation 21:8: “But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”

I had read many scriptures in the Bible that talked about hell, and I had heard many people share encounters online about hell, but I had never personally experienced anything like that, until I had my close encounter in hell.

Now let me share my close encounter with you.

A few years ago, I lost a family member who died in his mid-fifties after collapsing at work. He was rushed to the hospital, but unfortunately he passed away. It was devastating for my family. I was not very close to him, but I saw him often growing up whenever he visited my parents. Over the years, however, I saw less of him. I think the last time I saw him was perhaps four years before he passed away. His death hit my parents very hard.

At some point, while funeral preparations were ongoing, I remember praying and going to sleep, after which I had a dream that felt incredibly real. It did not feel like an ordinary dream. In the dream, I saw myself standing in front of a courtroom, watching the judgment of a man. The room looked glorious, and to my shock, it was my relative who had passed away standing on trial. Suddenly, I heard a voice from the judgment seat declaring that he had been found guilty of sorcery. I did not see the One who pronounced the judgment, but I heard a bold and powerful voice declaring him guilty. My relative had nothing to say in response to the verdict.

The next moment, two ugly looking beings came and dragged him away while he wept bitterly. It seemed as though I was also being taken along to witness where he was being sent. I could not believe what I was seeing. The beings dragging him looked terrifying, and I could hear screams everywhere and feel intense heat coming from the place where he was being taken.

We entered an area where you could literally feel fear, torment, and unbearable heat. Those are the only words I can use to describe the atmosphere of that place. I was not being dragged into hell myself, but was only being shown it, like an observer. I began screaming and begging in the dream not to witness any more of what was about to unfold. I did not want to see any more; it was too frightening. I kept screaming until I suddenly woke up from the dream. I woke up shaken, but at the same time thankful for the encounter. I had been given a glimpse of what hell looks like. It was one of the scariest experiences of my life.

While this relative of mine was alive, although he was active in church, sadly, he also strongly believed in going to shrines and mallams for additional protection. We read in Revelation 21:8 that sorcerers “shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.” The only protection that can truly keep a person safe is the protection that comes from our Lord Jesus Christ.

My encounter in that dream reemphasised what I already knew, or perhaps even made that knowledge more real to me: hell is real.”

My uncle had nothing to say when the guilty verdict was pronounced. You, on the other hand, while you are still alive and reading this article, still have the opportunity to repent and ask God for forgiveness for your sins and transgressions. Time is moving very quickly, and none of us knows when death will come knocking. Let us live lives worthy of eternal life, always remembering that Jesus came to die for our sake. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”

Say this prayer:

“Dear Lord Jesus, today, I ask for forgiveness of my sins. Many times I have missed the mark. I have made mistakes, said things, and done things against Your Word. Cleanse me from all unrighteousness. Sanctify me, Jesus Christ, with Your precious blood. I invite You into my life as my Lord and personal Saviour. Lead me from today onward. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.”
