God desires to speak to His creation man, and this is evidenced as far back as the very beginning. In Genesis 2:16-17, we see God come to man to command him as follows, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”
God is a speaking God, and in the old testament, we see Him use prophet’s as a medium to speak, instruct, command and guide man. Once Jesus came to die for our sins, or, in the new dispensation, God has opened up His voice unto everyone. We read in Acts chapter 2:17-18 that
17 “And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your young men shall see visions, Your old men shall dream dreams.
18 And on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days; And they shall prophesy.
We clearly see from this scripture that God’s voice is accessible to everyone, but unfortunately, many people still do not know how to access the voice of the Lord, although it is freely available unto everyone.
When I became born again I began to hear the voice of the Lord both audibly and in the realms of the spirit. I wrote about it here. Click this link if you have not read it. I have heard the stories of many other people who also began to hear the voice of the Lord immediately when they became born again. We all have a very prophetic side that can hear and/or pick up signals from the divine, but we need to stir it up; especially in order for us to know the will of our Father. I will share a few ways you can activate your prophetic side, as backed by scripture.
You can desire or ask God for a prophetic or supernatural encounter, and this can unlock your prophetic side. Moses began to hear the voice of the Lord when he had the encounter with God in Exodus Chapter 3.Exodus 3:2-5 says,
2 “And the Angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire from the midst of a bush. So he looked, and behold, the bush was burning with fire, but the bush was not consumed.
3 Then Moses said, “I will now turn aside and see this great sight, why the bush does not burn.”
4 So when the Lord saw that he turned aside to look, God called to him from the midst of the bush and said, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, “Here I am.”
5 Then He said, “Do not draw near this place. Take your sandals off your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground.”
6 Moreover He said, “I am the God of your father—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look upon God.
After this encounter Moses’ prophetic side was activated and he could hear the voice of the Lord until he died. By the voice of the Lord, he was able to bring deliverance to the people of Israel; leading them out of Egypt. Supernatural encounters can activate your prophetic side and open up a channel for you to hear the voice of the Lord.
In 1 Samuel Chapter 3, Eli perceived what Samuel was hearing was the voice of the Lord and therefore instructed him on how to respond, that is, “Speak Lord, for thy servant heareth”. After Samuel’s response to the call, that encounter opened up the voice of the Lord unto him until he died. Desire encounters that can activate your prophetic side.
Another way by which you can activate your prophetic side or open up a channel of hearing God is by being in the company of Prophets. In 1 Samuel: 10-11, the prophet Samuel told Saul that he would meet a group of prophets on his journey back home, and he would prophesy with them. So it happened in verse 10 that,
10 “When they came there to the hill, there was a group of prophets to meet him; then the Spirit of God came upon him, and he prophesied among them.
11 And it happened, when all who knew him formerly saw that he indeed prophesied among the prophets, that the people said to one another, “What is this that has come upon the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?”
The Spirit of Prophecy rubbed off on Saul when he was in the company of prophets and he began to prophesy with them. Going to prophetic meetings and walking with prophets of God can activate your prophetic side. When the people who formerly knew Saul saw him prophesy in the midst of the prophets, they knew that something had come upon him. Saul’s prophetic side was activated by being in the company of prophets. I pray that your prophetic side be activated even as you read this.
How does “being in the midst of prophets” translate in your everyday life? You can be in the midst of prophets by reading material written by prophets, watching prophetic ministrations or being an avid follower of a prophet you admire, even on social media. Doing these things can activate your prophetic side.
There are many other means by which your prophetic side can be activated; one of such being by receiving the Holy Ghost and another, by impartation, through the laying on of hands.
Let’s read this scripture and then I will explain below. Acts 19:1-7 reads as follows:
1 “And it happened, while Apollos was at Corinth, that Paul, having passed through the upper regions, came to Ephesus. And finding some disciples
2 he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” So they said to him, “We have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.”
3 And he said to them, “Into what then were you baptized?” So they said, “Into John’s baptism.”
4 Then Paul said, “John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.”
5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
6 And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied.
7 Now the men were about twelve in all. “
The men in this scripture had only been baptized by water for repentance, but they were yet to receive the Holy Ghost. They however spoke tongues and prophesied once Paul laid hands on them. Speaking in tongues is one of the manifestations of receiving the Holy Ghost. Once you receive the Holy Ghost and begin to speak in tongues, there is an activation of the prophetic.
A lot of us are very prophetic but we do not pay attention to that side of us. Have you had an experience where you woke up thinking about someone and before you realise they call you? Or you have a dream about someone and by the end of the day you hear from them? These are all signs you need to pay attention to your prophetic side. You will need the prophetic to aid you in decision making. You need to activate the prophetic side of you.
Ask Jesus to speak to you and confirm His word. You can ask Him to confirm His work by a happening or by giving you a scripture. You would be surprised what you have been missing out on. The twelve men in Acts 19 began to prophesy immediately the Holy Spirit came upon them.
Finally you can be activated by the laying of hands by a man of God, like Paul did for the twelve men in Acts 19. This is what we call prophetic impartation. I will write more about this a little later. This is what God told Moses about laying his hands on Joshua in Numbers 21:18-20, which reads,
18 “And the Lord said to Moses: “Take Joshua the son of Nun with you, a man in whom is the Spirit, and lay your hand on him;
19 set him before Eleazar the priest and before all the congregation, and inaugurate[d] him in their sight.
20 And you shall give some of your authority to him, that all the congregation of the children of Israel may be obedient.
God told Moses to impart a dimension of his spiritual authority to Joshua. The laying of hands by a spiritual authority can activate you. After this experience, Joshua began to hear God’s voice and see visions. Moses’ impartation gave him access to this dimension.
